Dear Reader,
The
Columbia Novice Tournament provides our organization a unique opportunity
to both welcome back returning debaters as well as introduce newcomers
to the activity so many of us enjoy. Therefore, I wish to thank
everyone responsible for putting together this wonderful tournament
from the tab staff to the banquet organizers to the seminar leaders
and exhibition round participants.
There
are, however, a few peoople who have specially contributed to the
1998 Novice Tournament. Matt Schwartz and Jess Wendover, both members-at-large
of the APDA board, served as liaisons between the tournament staff
and the rest of the board and as advisors to the tournament staff.
Robin Effron and Julia Moses also deserve special thanks for directing
this year's tournament.
To
those of you returning to APDA for another year, welcome back. I
hope both this tournament and the entire year prove to be as interesting
and enjoyable as they have been in the past. For those of you who
are new to parliamentary debate and are reading an issue of Clash
for the first time, the next two days offer you both the chance
to not only get your feet wet in parliamentary debate but to also
learn about the activity through exhibition rounds and seminars.
You have three terrific avenues to learn about this stimulating
activity.
I want
you to do one more thing. I ask you to also look at the friendships
and camaraderie exhibited by those who are returning to the activity.
I know that's why I am returning to parliamentary debate for a fourth
year and I hope you will find it worthwhile as well.
Sincerely,
John
Williams

September 18, 1998
Dear Novice Debaters,
First
off, welcome to the 1998 Annual APDA Novice Tournament and welcome
to Columbia University. This is the fourth time Columbia has received
the honor of hosting this tournament. Each year, our tema works
hard to make sure that we fulfill APDA's expectations by running
a quality tournament. As we have come to expect, many people were
interested in the progress of our tournament preparations. We got
phone calls and e-mails from the senior members of your teams all
summer. We talked to APDA members from several years ago. We answered
questions about all aspects of the tournament. We felt accountable
to everyone because of APDA's tight sense of community.
I know
I speak on behalf of all of those concerned parties when I say that
the greatest possible measure of success is not what they think,
but what you think of our tournament. Habor no doubts that
everyone you see around you -- the tournament staff, APDA's senior
members, the APDA Alumni -- all are here because they like APDA
and they genuinely think you will too. Feel free to approach anyone
with questions or concerns.
Each
of us has been in your position: new, confused, inexperienced or
intimidated. We all want you to feel comfortable and flourish. We
all hope thaty ou gain some of the experience, insight, ability,
and friends that we've acquired through debate.
I wish
you the best of luck at this tournament and hope to see you again
soon.
Yours,
Jess
Wendover

The Guide on the APDA site is more recent, having been written this
summer by members of the APDA Executive Board. In the interest of
coherency, the below link is to that guide, not the one in
