Lincoln County officials announce grand opening of new Lincoln County Courthouse

Lincoln County Court officials join Lincoln County government officials to celebrate the grand opening of the new Lincoln County Courthouse at 120 Justice Drive, Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092.

“We are grateful to our past and present Lincoln County Commissioners who have contributed to the planning and funding of this beautiful new facility,” said Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Forrest D. Bridges. “Developing a plan for a building that meets the current and future needs of the court system has been a challenge, made even more difficult by the prospect of relocating from a beloved historic building that has served as the heart of downtown the past century. We believe this new building will carry on much of the beauty and tradition of our historic courthouse while providing the physical space and efficiency demanded by Lincoln County as it continues to grow rapidly.”

The three-story, 105,000-square-foot courthouse, designed by Moseley Architects and built by Barnhill Contracting Company, houses the offices of the Clerk of the Court, District Attorney, Magistrate, Clerk of Procedure, Public Defender, Probation Service and the Judicial Offices for Land and supreme court. The $36.5 million facility also houses nine courtrooms and features designated areas for jury meetings and grand jurors, multiple meeting rooms for attorneys and clients, and new furniture for all courtrooms and spaces. The facility is equipped with the latest technology, multiple public restrooms, and a designated area for the safe transfer of inmates to and from the courthouse.

The initial phase of this project began in 2015 after Judge Bridges met with Lincoln County Manager Kelly Atkins regarding the physical condition of the courthouse at 1 Court Square and its impact on court operations. Atkins pitched the idea of building a new courthouse to the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners in December 2015. As a result, the Board of Commissioners decided to place the project on the capital projects list. Over the next few years, staff and the Board of Commissioners reviewed several potential sites for construction of the facility. After much deliberation and input from voters and outside agencies, the Board of Commissioners decided to construct the new courthouse on Gamble Drive in Lincolnton. Lincoln County secured funding in 2019 and construction began in May 2020.

“Over the past thirty years I have been involved in many discussions about the old courthouse and how it lacks technology, security and adequate parking,” said Atkins. “When I was appointed county manager in 2014, one of the first goals was to review the status of all county-owned buildings and decide what needs to be done to address issues with existing buildings. In the past eight years, the county has made great strides in improving many public buildings; However, none of these was more important than solving the existing court problems. After many meetings between local and state leaders, the new courthouse was completed in 2019. I am very proud of the commissioners’ decision to build a courthouse that features enhanced security and technology and is expected to last well over 100 years.”

We believe this new building will carry on much of the beauty and tradition of our historic courthouse while providing the physical space and efficiencies that Lincoln County will demand as it continues to grow rapidly.
