Registration open for state conferences for boys and girls – Broomfield Enterprise
The American Legion – Colorado has opened registration portals for the 2022 boys and girls state sessions at colegionboysstate.org and alacolorado.com/girls-state.
The girls’ state conference will be held June 4-9 at the University of Northern Colorado campus in Greeley, while the boys’ conference will be held June 5-11 at the Hotel Elegante Conference and Event Center in Colorado Springs.
The conferences are open to current high school juniors and provide an opportunity to participate in a program where they live together as self-governing citizens and learn about the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of American citizenship. The programs are free to students sponsored by their local American Legion Posts and American Legion Auxiliary Units.
Sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, Colorado Boys & Girls State are separate week-long educational programs offered across 49 states that teach aspiring high school leaders (prospective seniors) how our state government works by putting them on national level Create a replica city, county and state government. Programs include developing party platforms, campaigning for political office, and writing and debating bills.
Colorado also includes media and justice industry programs. Attendance at Boys and Girls State remains a coveted qualification for scholarship and fellowship candidates across the country, as well as those seeking a future career in public service. College credits are offered and there are opportunities to apply for various college scholarships.
Educational programs are non-partisan and are not affiliated with or funded by any actual political party. In addition, two boys and two girls from each state program will be selected nationwide to participate in Boys Nation and Girls Nation, taking place in Washington, DC in August, a similar impartial week-long program with a focus on our national government.
Former Colorado program alumni include Congressman Ed Perlmutter and Mayor Mike Coffman. Other national alumni include astronaut Neil Armstrong, Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson (the Air Force Academy’s first female superintendent), basketball greats Michael Jordan and Jerry West, coach Nick Saban, broadcasters Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley.
